OJTalk.com in the Las Vegas Weekly

“How lucky for me that he made the stupidest mistake of his life in my city!” Scot Savage is talking about former NFL star, television pitchman and double-murder acquittee Orenthal James Simpson. On September 13, 2007, Simpson and three armed men allegedly went into the Palace Station to retrieve his sports memorabilia. As a result, Simpson’s facing armed robbery and kidnapping charges in a trial scheduled to start in September.

It’s kinda funny seeing a grown man this gleeful. A tie-dye-shirt-wearing real-estate agent by day, by evening Savage is the hucksterish webmaster behind OJtalk.com, a cartoonishly amateur website featuring O.J. chat rooms (five in all), photos, paraphernalia, even an O.J. crossword puzzle. The site’s promo line: “100 percent Juice all the time.”

Days after Simpson’s arrest, Savage bought the domain name, figuring he could create the web repository for anything trial-related. Savage got someone to hold up an “OJtalk.com” placard at the first police press conference and, within a day, 50 people signed into the chat room. Double-whammied by the housing market meltdown and foreclosure crisis, Savage reconfigured the site into an e-commerce destination where you can buy all sorts of cheesy items, such as coffee mugs with Simpson’s mug shot. (Get it?) Thus, the glee: “Ultimately, I hope to make some money off of this,” he says.

It hasn’t happened yet. Maybe America has O.J. fatigue. If so, Savage has an answer. During Simpson’s arraignment, he saw how more colorful characters—the guy in a chicken suit, the funky-dressed Chicago soul brother, the Nicole Brown Simpson look-alike—got all the media attention. So he put an ad on Craigslist looking for “freaks.”

“I answered the call,” says “Moondog” Wantland, a 52-year-old, wheelchair-bound former professional wrestler whose first match was against Andre the Giant.

We’re inside Moondog’s cramped Henderson studio. In case you’re wondering—no, he doesn’t mind being called a freak, and yes, he’s tickled to be the bespectacled, Santa-bearded, Dr. Seuss-hat-wearing face of OJtalk.com. (The website’s other spokesperson, a 36-year-old naval reservist grandmother who dresses as Wonder Woman and Xena the Warrior Princess, was out of town at the time.)

“Get it in there that I’m disabled but that I’m still a fully functioning individual who can work for a living,” Moondog says. At this, he and his guest, a black-clad, sequin-bloused Lady El Vis (real name: Shawnda Guerra), launch into a humorous version of “All Shook Up” that, I suspect, isn’t supposed to be funny. All three met while working with madman comic Jeff Beacher.

Now it all makes sense.

When the trial starts, Moondog plans to be parading about in his sequined, bandana-ed wheelchair and outrageous getups too colorful to ignore. (This day, he wore bright red trousers, a glittery vest and a necklace with lighted skulls.) It’s in his best interest if the trial becomes a spectacle. If not, he may have nothing to show for his smug opportunism. Savage tries to sound optimistic.

“Hopefully, justice will be served this time,” Savage says. And if the word “justice” fits on a coffee mug, all the better, eh?

Earthquake Clears Simpsons Courtroom In Vegas

Jul. 30, 2008 FROM Las Vegas Review-Journal

NORM: Judge Glass clears courtroom quickly

It looked like a jailbreak at the Clark County Courthouse on Tuesday after an earthquake rattled the 15th floor courtroom of O.J. Simpson Judge Jackie Glass.

As the building lurched during the 11:45 a.m. quake and the courtroom creaked, Glass ordered everyone out after her clerk pointed to a window and said, "Look at the blinds." "They were swinging from side to side," said attorney Al Lasso, who was cross-examining a witness in a competency hearing.

"There was creaking noises coming from the gallery," Lasso said.

Lasso said the judge told the attendees, "We're having an earthquake" and then ordered everybody out because she was concerned for their safety.

About a half-dozen people, including her district court staff, left the courtroom and rushed down the stairs in the building, which has come under fire for construction defects and elevator issues.

"It was definitely an E ticket ride," said Lasso, who spent a lot of time on New York City's subway system while growing up in New Jersey.

Glass is scheduled to preside over Simpson's kidnapping and robbery trial in September.

Letter: Vote for the man, not his skin color
July 24, 2008 11:39:00 PM

Obama’s campaign is imploding. The reason? The Jesse Jacksons, Al Sharptons and Spike Lees of the world are sabotoging him with every “black power,” “chocolate city” and “us against them” they utter. If a white president can represent all of the people, black and white, why must a black president represent only the blacks?

This feels like the O.J. Simpson verdict to me: “he is black, he can do no wrong.”

Obama does not have a chance with all the “hell” he is geting from the “homeboy” community. You want a black president? Make it about the best man for the job, not the color of his skin.

An Interview With Eric Kampmann About Trail Thoughts
Posted on July 24th, 2008
by Simon Barrett

I recently had the opportunity to review Eric Kampmann’s latest book Trail Thoughts. It is a very reflective piece with biblically inspired thoughts for each day of the year. This is a book designed for the reader to sip and enjoy, rather than guzzle down like us reviewers are apt to do!

Changing the subject completely for a moment. When you are not writing, and I understand that you currently have 3 books to your credit, you are involved in the publishing industry. In fact if my memory serves me correctly it was your house that published the O.J. Simpson If I Did It book. Can you tell us a little about that project?

Talk about a question that requires a long answer! Yes, my publishing company did publish If I Did It last September. Perhaps I am naïve, but I did not expect the intensity of interest that the book generated during the moments after it was announced that Beaufort would indeed publish the book. A point of clarification: The Goldman’s owned the book Beaufort published, not OJ Simpson. The Goldman’s won the book in a bankruptcy court as part of the judgment they had won against Mr. Simpson years before. Ironically, they hated the book, but the court awarded it on the condition that they publish it. The Goldman’s knew nothing about publishing. I did, therefore, I decided to do what I could to help them succeed in this endeavor.

As for the decision to become involved, I had few qualms because I was working for the Goldman’s and not OJ Simpson. Many people were enraged that the book would be published but they missed the real point. OJ Simpson’s own words would finally show the world who this man really was and people could then decide whether justice had been rendered in LA back in 1994.
Apparently, the public wanted to know more about this case and they wanted to read Mr. Simpson’s own words. The book became a national bestseller topping out at number 2 on the NY Times bestseller list.

In retrospect was it a good business decision?

In retrospect it was a riskier project than I first thought. It is only from the vantage point of today that the book looks like an inevitable bestseller.

DMX Arrested for Identity Theft
Are you keeping score at home of the number of DMX arrests this year? If my math is correct, I think we’re at eleventy fafillion.

This time, the rapper and Bedford homeowner was arrested in Phoenix this past weekend on a felony charge of identity theft, according to the Associated Press.
It all started in April, when he used a fake name and Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill.

I bet O.J. Simpson is in his home thinking “Damn, and I thought I screwed up.”

Apparently DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, checked into the Mayo Clinic in April for pneumonia, using the fake name “Troy Jones.” Troy Jones? Dude, DMX has sold millions of records. He would have had a better shot fooling someone with the name Turd Ferguson.

Police followed the case for months and arrested him Saturday once they had enough evidence. As DMX was carried away by police, he turned to the horde of TV cameras and said “Harassment.”
Classic. But seriously, how many times can he possibly get arrested? He’s been handcuffed more times than Eliot Spitzer on a business trip.

Today's OJ Simpson News Quote From The Web

No one killed in Bancroft, West Virginia Today
By Kris
Bancroft, West Virginia - It was a good day in the small town of Bancroft, West Virginia, today because all 367 residents made it through the day unscathed.

“It’s always good when the people of Bancroft aren’t killed,” said Bancroft mayor William Hotpants. “One day last year someone died and it was very sad.”

Common killers of people include cancer, heart disease, and O.J. Simpson, but none of these struck today.

“I’m alive and I feel great,” said twenty-two year old Helen Thompson. “I figured I would still be alive and I was.” “I’m old and will be dead sooner rather than later,” said seventy-five year old Gerald Whopper. “But I’m not dead today.”

What tomorrow holds for Bancroft, no one can tell for sure, but its residents are hopeful of another day without deaths. Given that only one person had died in the last year, the chances certainly seem good. Though some might say the town is due for a death.

O.J. Simpson jury questions reviewed in Vegas

By KEN RITTER

LAS VEGAS (AP) — O.J. Simpson's lawyers lost a bid Friday to question prospective jurors in his armed-robbery trial about what they know and think about the former football star.

Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass also rejected the lawyers' attempt to use a long pretrial questionnaire to gauge how those in the jury pool might respond to defense strategies.

Simpson, Charles Ehrlich and Clarence "C.J." Stewart face kidnapping and other charges on suspicion of robbing sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room in September.

Defense lawyers are concerned about seating an impartial jury because of Simpson's celebrity — as an NFL Hall of Famer and the acquitted defendant in the Los Angeles slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

"There's people probably out there, judge, that believe Mr. Simpson doesn't have right to be out on the street, much less own property," defense lawyer Gabriel Grasso said.

"The jurors, basically, know a decent amount about my client before I open my mouth," he said.

Grasso also argued to quiz jurors about two possible defense strategies without saying what the questions would be. None of the questions in the questionnaire have been made public.

One question would have dealt with Simpson believing items he and several other men took from two memorabilia dealers belonged to him. The other would have addressed Simpson being present but not the orchestrator of the event.

The judge removed both questions. She allowed 76 others, and possibly one more, if defense lawyers and prosecutors agree to the wording before another pretrial status hearing July 31.

Lawyers said last month they were considering 115 questions. Many questions the judge accepted have multiple parts, they said.

Glass called the questionnaire the longest she has handled in her more than five years on the bench. She said she wanted it completed in time to hand out in August to 400 or more prospective jurors and expedite what both sides expect will be a contentious jury selection.

"This jury selection is not going to go on and on," she said. "We're looking for jurors for all of the defendants and the state that can be fair and impartial."

The judge also rejected another request to separate Simpson's trial from co-defendants Ehrlich and Stewart.

Simpson, Ehrlich and Stewart did not attend the hearing. Each has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon on allegations they robbed two sports collectibles dealers at gunpoint last Sept. 13 at a Las Vegas casino hotel room.

A kidnapping conviction carries the possibility of life in prison with the possibility of parole. A robbery conviction would mean mandatory prison time.

O.J. Simpson Coming to Colorado

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (MyFOXColorado.com) - If you ever wanted to hang out with O.J. Simpson, you'll have that opportunity the week of July 20 in Breckenridge.

FOX 31 entertainment reporter and Denver Post columnist Bill Husted reports that Simpson will be in Breckenridge next week. Simpson has visited before and he apparently likes it there.

He'll be chillin' in the Colorado Mountains just about a month before his robbery trial is scheduled to begin in Las Vegas.

Simpson has been seen in the bars of Summit County, and he's been known to chat with people. Husted reports that when people see him, they like to buy him drinks, and Simpson has said he's not going to turn them down.

Simpson has also been seen on some of the golf courses in that part of the state.

Simpson is awaiting trial on charges related to a robbery case in Las Vegas. In September 2007 he was arrested and charged with numerous felonies:

Robbery with a deadly weapon
Burglary with a firearm
assault with a deadly weapon
First-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon
Coercion with use of a deadly weapon
Conspiracy to commit kidnapping
Conspiracy to commit a crime

Police investigators said that a group of men allegedly entered a room at the Palace Station hotel-casino and took sports memorabilia from a man at gunpoint.

Police questioned Simpson and he admitted to taking the items, which he said had been stolen from him. But he denied breaking into the hotel room. He also denied that he or anyone else carried a gun during the incident.

Simpson's trial is scheduled to begin September 8 in Las Vegas.
